Superman, also known as Clark Kent, of Earth-22 is an Elseworlds character featured in the influential comic book miniseries Kingdom Come (1996). This version of Superman exists outside the main DC Comics continuity. His first appearance was in the comic book, Kingdom Come #1 (May, 1996).
Decades into the Modern Age of superheroes, this Superman operates in a world disillusioned by the rise of reckless and violent metahumans. The death of Lois Lane at the hands of the Joker, and the subsequent inaction of the legal system leads Superman to self-imposed exile and retirement. This is triggered further by the popularization of characters such as Magog, who embodies the changing times and disregard for traditional heroics.
He is eventually compelled to return to action after a catastrophic event destroys Kansas. Superman then reforms the Justice League to restore order and protect humanity from the escalating conflict between the older heroes and the new generation of metahumans, attempting to reignite the ideals of hope and responsibility.
